HISD Graduation Requirements

The State of Texas has established three high school graduation programs:

• Minimum High School Program*
• Recommended High School Program
• Distinguished Achievement Program (Advanced High School Program)

Students who plan to enroll in college after high school are highly encouraged by both local and state educators to participate in the Recommended High School Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program.  The Distinguished Achievement Program (Advanced High School Program) necessitates the completion of The Recommended High School Program plus additional requirements. 

Regardless of the graduation program chosen, all graduates of HISD schools must complete the state-required courses outlined under that program. 

All students are encouraged to develop a personal four-year graduation plan and review this plan each year. Parents and students should keep in mind that while a plan is subject to change, it is important to insure that all the requirements for the selected graduation program are met when modifications are considered.

* For students entering the ninth grade in the 2004-05 school year and thereafter: Recent legislation requires school districts to enroll all students in the Recommended High School Program. It further requires students to complete the recommended program to receive a diploma unless the student's parent and a school counselor or administrator agree that the student should be allowed to enroll in and complete the minimum program.
